What's Better, On site or Remote Interpretation?

If you are hoping for a simple definitive answer to what is better, remote interpretation or on site interpretation, look away now because there isn’t one. Or at least that is what we believe here at Interpretation solutions.

There are pros and cons to both. Remote interpretation saves on travel costs for both interpreters and technicians. Also, it is arguably kinder to the planet du to decreasing the amount of fuel burned getting the team and interpretation equipment to the venue. Ever improving remote interpretation systems, Zoom, Voice Boxer, Ablio just to name a few do a reasonably good job of replicating the controls and transmissions systems you find in a physical booth. However, all are reliant on good quality internet connections working as they should and rely very much on the quality of the equipment provided by individual presenters, delegates and interpreters. A good technician might be able to dash into a booth to replace a failing interpreter consul or quickly replace a presenters lavaliere that has failed but that option is not there when the meeting is remote.

With on site interpretation, you may have to pay more for travel and possibly a little more for physical equipment over virtual. However, sound quality is arguably better and technicians are on hand to troubleshoot and proactively manage sound. Infrared transmission systems are set up and tested ahead of time to ensure no interference and infra red is also arguably more secure as it has less propensity to ‘leak’ beyond the meeting room. Some clients also like to have interpreters on hand to informally assist where they can outside the formal event but where good communication is still needed

There are, of course, also hybrid options available. These should allow you to capture the best elements of each. However, care is needed to ensure you don’t simply capture the worst.
